Pests that Thrive in the Spring

Spring is here once again. While the flowers start to bloom and we spend more time outdoors, pests are coming out of their hibernation as well, with many common insects starting to spread in North Houston. Just as plants have specific growing seasons, certain pests thrive better in the spring, compared to other times of the year. Here are some of the most common pests that thrive in the spring:

Ticks. Ticks are around most of the year. However tick bites are most common in the spring. People and pets spend more time outdoors in the spring and that means more potential exposure to tick bites. Bug spray isn’t just for summer months! Keep yourself and your family protected, especially in the spring by using tick repellents when going outdoors. Keep the grass in your yard low, and use extra caution in wooded areas.

Cluster fly. Cluster flies are typical to regular flies, but with a golden color. They are common in homes with attics. Cluster flies will lay dormant during the winter months and emerge once the weather starts to warm. Like the name indicates, cluster flies tend to congregate in swarms. They don’t cause damage to the home, but are another source of annoyance.

Termites. Spring means swarming season for termites. A professional termite protection plan should start in the spring. It’s best to start as soon as the weather warms to prevent termites from breeding, and spreading throughout the home. If your home hasn’t been treated yet, now is the time to give us a call.

Kudzu bugs. Kudzu bugs are the newest pest in the south. They first appeared in Georgia in 2009, however they have spread all over where the climate is warm and humid. They might make cracks in the foundation their home for the winter, and wake up and spread their foul odor all over the home. They can also stain fabrics throughout your house.

Ants. Ants will begin to forage for food as soon as the weather warms up. In the spring, when warmer weather is more consistent, they will venture further from their colonies and into homes. Spring rains also force ants from their colonies, as they seek drier, higher ground, they may first appear on decks, in patios, or by windowsills.

Beetles. Beetles of all kinds start to become active in the spring. The larder beetle loves to find cracks in the home to winter and emerge in the spring. Adult larder beetles may be a presence in the kitchen, as they will eat most food we like. Lady beetles also become more active in the spring after wintering with us. The Asian variety are becoming very common. They are multicolored and will fly about in the home. Asian lady beetles can spread a foul odor in the home, if they feel threatened.

If you have any of these types of pests in your home, the time to act is now! Earthwise pest control is here to help keep your home clear of pests, and spring is the best time to develop a treatment plan based on your needs.
